TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- Northeastern State University English professor Dr. Melissa Strong
will attend a two-week institute called The Visual Culture of the American Civil War
this summer. The National Endowment for the Humanities sponsors the institute which
will be in New York, N.Y. at the Graduate Center at the City University of New York.
Strong teaches courses in American literature and womens literature at NSU, including
a class called The Civil War in Fact and Fiction which addresses responses to and
representations of the war from the 1860s to the present. Both Strongs teaching and
research make connections between visual and written forms of expression.
She will attend The Visual Culture of the American Civil War institute July 7-18.
This program will assess how visual media, including the fine arts and photography,
impact the recording and the understanding of the Civil War on both sides of the conflict.
Institute members will participate in seminars led by noted historians, art historians
and archivists; take part in hands-on sessions in museums and archives; and attend
new media lab workshops. Institute activities will assist in developing approaches
that use visual evidence to enhance participants teaching and research.
